With a resolution honoring “the contributions and legacy of UMGC students, alumni, faculty, and staff in Maryland and around the world,” the Maryland General Assembly declared Monday, Feb. 10, as the  91ֱ of Maryland Global Campus Day. Senator Jim Rosapepe and Delegate Mary A. Lehman recognized UMGC President Gregory Fowler on the floor of their respective chambers in Annapolis as university officials and alumni looked on.

“I am honored to accept this resolution on behalf of our global community, the faculty and staff who are relentless in placing the needs of our students at the center of everything we do,” said President Fowler, holding the resolution in the State House following the ceremony. “This commitment—and an innovative spirit that has run through this institution since its founding—is the bedrock that supports our efforts to educate our students in Maryland, in the military and around the world. We deeply appreciate the leadership of Senate President Bill Ferguson and House Speaker Adrienne Jones and thank them for their dedication and commitment to better the lives of all Marylanders.”

Since 1947, 91ֱ of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) has focused on serving adult learners in the workforce and the military. Today, UMGC ranks as Maryland’s largest provider of postsecondary education; the nation’s most transfer-friendly university; and the premier learning partner of the U.S. military, both stateside and abroad.

UMGC maintains locations throughout Maryland, across the United States, in more than 20 countries and territories, serving military servicemembers and their families at more than 175 sites around the world.

The university’s impact in the state is highlighted by its outstanding performance in areas that uplift Maryland residents and drive economic opportunity, including leading 91ֱ System of Maryland schools in degrees conferred, in the number of minority students enrolled, the number of military veteran students enrolled and the number of IT degrees conferred to women and students of color.

More than 111,000 UMGC graduates live in the state of Maryland, with the global alumni community surpassing 307,000.

With more than 50 percent of its students affiliated with the military—including active-duty servicemembers, National Guard members and veterans—UMGC was recently ranked #1 in the Military Times’ “Best for Vets” list of top online and non-traditional schools.

UMGC is the only open-admission university within the 91ֱ System of Maryland (USM), and it confers a third of all degrees granted by the USM. It offers the second lowest in-state tuition and fees among four-year Maryland public institutions.

The Maryland legislature recognized UMGC in a similar way last year and before that in 2017, when it received a resolution from the General Assembly and proclamation from the governor celebrating the university’s 70th anniversary.
