At the young age of 15, Erika Lane became a mother. With the weight of the world stacked against her, Lane was determined to not become a statistic. Raised by her grandparents who modeled a strong work ethic, she obtained her GED at 17 and, shortly after, began a career in human resources.鈥

鈥淎s long as you have breath in your body, no matter what other capabilities you have, you're capable of something, so you need to get up and grind,鈥 are the words Lane鈥檚 grandparents frequently said. Lane not only instilled that philosophy in her children, but she carries it in鈥痟er daily life鈥攊ncluding in building her career in human resources over nearly 30 years.聽

Her accomplishments include recently being named senior manager of human resources business partner for American Airlines along with moving to Dallas, Texas. Last year, she received her Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) certification. This month, at 49 years old, Lane is preparing for another major achievement. On May 17 she will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from 91直播 of Maryland Global Campus (鲍惭骋颁).听

Erika Lane will be the first in her extended family to graduate from college.

Lane began her degree program in 2015 and will be the first in her extended family to graduate from college.鈥

鈥淚 have a great career, but I realized I wanted to complete my degree for me. It was important, regardless of whether it accelerates my career or not,鈥 Lane said. 鈥淚t was a great opportunity to continue to learn and to improve in different skills and competencies that helped me in my journey of professional development.鈥濃

One of the biggest challenges Lane faced as an adult learner was learning how to juggle her day job and schoolwork. Thanks to UMGC鈥檚 flexibility and robust education platform, she figured out how to discipline herself to stay the course.鈥

In 2023, she enrolled in the Professional and Career Exploration (PACE) course for transfer students.聽

鈥淓rika Lane was a dedicated and thoughtful student in my fall 2023 PACE 111B course. I asked her to lead the group project, and she did an excellent job鈥攃reating a clear team charter and using an Excel random generator to assign tasks,鈥 said Constance Harris, a UMGC adjunct professor. 鈥淚 enjoyed working with Erika and appreciated her strong leadership and engagement throughout the course.鈥

鈥淪he was amazing and motivating,鈥 Lane said of Harris. 鈥淣ot only was the content helpful, but so was the lesson in working and collaborating in teams, especially when you don't know each other. It challenges your courage to lead and strengthens your muscle鈥痑s an inclusive leader.鈥濃

While pursuing her degree, Lane had the opportunity to work on other group projects beyond PACE.鈥

鈥淚t gave you a little more of that classroom feel, and it does assert some level of collaboration,鈥 Lane explained. 鈥淵ou have to actually take things offline, calendarize with each other and take some ownership in executing the deliverables and figuring out who's going to own what to get the project across the finish line.鈥濃

In Lane鈥檚 global human resources management course, she worked with a group to put together a presentation on talent recruitment and acquisition. Lane credits the use of Zoom, strong communication skills and team participation as the key to a successful presentation.鈥

鈥淲hat I liked about it logistically was just the idea of us having to see it all the way through to the goal post in a hugely collaborative fashion, and we all had pieces that we owned in that space,鈥 Lane said. 鈥淚t helps you understand how to hold yourself accountable but also how to hold others accountable.鈥濃

Lane added, 鈥淎nd as a leader in an organization as big as American Airlines, that's a skill set that's important for me to have.鈥濃

Lane said she gained valuable professional skills at work and in the classroom. Thanks to the support of American Airlines and past employers Wawa and Ikea, she has reached the finish line. Lane plans to explore additional advanced education opportunities this summer and maybe start a master鈥檚 program in the near future.鈥

鈥淕ive yourself some grace but remain disciplined and stay on course. There is no age limit to success,鈥 Lane tells future and current students. 鈥淲hatever your motivators are to make it happen, you just make it happen.鈥濃

A number of Lane鈥檚 children, a few grandchildren, extended family members and friends will attend her Grad Walk in Maryland to cheer her on. She is flying many of her children in; unfortunately, one of her daughters living in Africa will not be able to attend graduation. Lane refers to her kids as 鈥渢he Magnificent Seven鈥 and 鈥淗ouse of Dragons,鈥 due to their love of the TV series Game of Thrones. A dragon happens to be Lane鈥檚 Chinese zodiac sign too.鈥

鈥淢y kids will tell you to this day, they still remember some of my little 鈥榠sms鈥 I used to always tell them, like 鈥極pportunity doesn't really knock on the door,鈥欌 Lane said. 鈥淚n all of their own ways, they are applying that, and I'm super proud of them for that.鈥濃
